Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity

Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing ministry that brings people together to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter in northern Ocean County. Since its founding in 1999, the Northern Ocean County affiliate completed 18 new affordable homes, 60 Hurricane Sandy critical home repairs and over 156 home repairs for the disabled, veterans and residents in the community. Northern Ocean Habitat also operates the ReStore, a furniture and home goods store at 1214 Route 37 East, Toms River. The Habitat ReStore accepts donations of new and gently used items that are sold to treasure hunters and bargain shoppers alike, raising money to support Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. The ReStore provides an affordable avenue for home improvement projects and to date, has kept over 8,255,790 pounds of perfectly good items from ending up in the landfill. The Habitat ReStore is a good deal for you, your community and the environment and helps fund affordable home construction and repair projects for local residents. Last week, members from the Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce joined Habitat for an A Brush with Kindness repair project at a 21 Plus, Inc. home.

Ms. Appleby joins us as Of Counsel, with concentration on Real Estate Law. Ms. Appleby joins CLDDS with 17 years prior experience as an attorney in private practice and over five years of public service as an Ocean County Superior Court Judge, in the Chancery Division, Family Part, as well as in the Criminal Division. She was the first woman elected in Toms River as a Council Member-At-Large in the newly formed Mayor-Council form of government in 2007 and her service was recognized when she received the Governor Whitman Excellence in Public Service designation. NEA Big Read is coming to Toms River.

NEA Big Read is coming to Toms River. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), NEA Big Read is designed to “broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.” Toms River Regional Schools is one of 75 not-for-profit organizations to receive a grant to host a project between September 2017 and June 2018. The NEA presents NEA Big Read in partnership with Arts Midwest. The district received a grant of $14,000 in support of its proposed program. Applicants were asked to choose from a diverse pool of 28 NEA-approved contemporary books, and design around it a relevant and impactful literacy program that includes book discussions, special events, and thematic projects. The district selected Station Eleven, a bestselling, post-apocalyptic novel by author Emily St. John Mandel. In the book, a flu pandemic creates chaos and loss for its central characters, who attempt to keep humanity alive through the arts. Through this lens, the district’s NEA Big Read will facilitate discussions and reflections on Superstorm Sandy and its effect on Toms River. The month-long program will take place throughout October 2017, five years to the month after the storm.

Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce To Award the District at Oct. 19 Ceremony

The Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce has named the Toms River Regional School District its 2017 “Distinguished Organization of the Year.” In a notification letter to Superintendent David Healy, the Chamber wrote, “This honor is bestowed upon individuals and/or organizations which have shown community concern and demonstrated outstanding, unselfish service in single or multiple fields in the civic, social, legal, cultural, religious, educational, governmental, health, athletic or business life of the Greater Toms River area.” Strides made by the district in recent years have led to noticeable growth and a banner year in 2017. Career Academies opened at each of the three high schools this September. The district has established and enhanced numerous community partnerships to the benefit of students and families. Schools have won national recognition for character, technology, and performance. Grant awards have provided considerable amounts of alternative funding, raised the district’s profile in the arena of highly competitive applications and, most importantly, positively impacted student achievement. Negative factors such as dropout rates, suspension rates and chronic absenteeism have markedly dropped while student performance related to advanced placement participation and SAT scores have increased. Veteran’s Family is Keeping the Memory of the USS Randolph Alive in 2017

By Noelle Carino September 7, 2017 Toms River, NJ – Gary Santos of Lindenhurst, NY visited Toms River, NJ earlier this year. While he was here, he visited the site of the USS Randolph’s anchor near Huddy Park. If you have been to the site, you will remember that the anchor is surrounded by personalized pavers - an initiative of the Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce decades earlier. Mr. Santos and his family wanted one of those pavers for a very special reason. When he reached out to Craig Ambrosio, Director of Toms River Parks, Buildings, and Grounds, for more information about securing one, Craig connected him with the Chamber. The request was simple: Mr. Santos wanted a personalized paver. The meaning was deep: his recently deceased father had served on the USS Randolph. The challenge was that the downtown paver project had been completed years and years earlier, and it was not clear how anyone could resurrect it - if only for the Santos family.
